Winter Storm Stella: Snow started blanketing northeastern United States

Winter storm stella has started pounding New York and Washington D.C on Tuesday and blizzard conditions are rolling into the region, residents have been advised to stay in their homes by public officials.

Bill de Blasio, the mayor of New York said on Monday: “If you must go out, do so for as limited time period as possible, but the best thing to do is stay in.” Schools in the areas have cancelled classes while airlines have also grounded their flights.

The Governor of New York Andrew Cuomo said: “It’s a good day to stay home. It is going to be a dangerous, dangerous situation.”

A blizzard warning has been issued by the National Weather Service which says that nearly 20 million people will be affected by the weather. The warning was issued for parts of New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Connecticut.

According to the forecasts these areas could experience up to 2 feet of snow by Wednesday, the temperature could fall 15 to 30 degrees below the normal temperature for this time of the year.

The transit officials in the New York metro area have said that trains and buses could be suspended for the whole day, the above ground subway service has already been suspended.

Large quantities of snow equipment has been readied by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. 

Almost 4,000 flights have been preemptively canceled by airlines due to the storm, the largest numbers of flights were cancelled at Newark International Airport in New Jersey and Boston Logan International Airport.
